Real Time GPS Tracking: Possibilities to Obtain the Position Information?

GPS, as you all know, stands for Global Positioning System, a satellite navigational system formed by 24 satellites orbiting the earth and their corresponding receivers on the earth. With that, GPS indicates that the system can be used everywhere on Earth, on land, at sea and in the air.

Basically, a GPS system receives signals from the GPS satellites. If it receives strong enough signals from three or more different satellites, it can calculate its position. However, if the signals are very weak, it can be difficult for the GPS device to receive even three different signals. Well, this is actually the case in most towns with high buildings and relatively narrow streets or those under trees with thick foliage. It is actually under these conditions that the real time GPS tracking could be troublesome. As experts often say, real time GPS tracking inside buildings is even seldom possible.

There is one particular thing that you must know about a real time GPS tracking device, that is, it does not send any signal, neither to the GPS satellites nor anywhere else. Note that a real time GPS tracking device just receive signals. So, if you want to know exactly where the GPS device is, you will need a second device to send this information to the GPS central station. And, of the many new technologies in the market that can be used as a second tool, a cellular network is often considered. This then means that a real time GPS tracking device must at least contain a GPS receiver as well as a cellular modem.

As you may know, there are different possibilities for the real time GPS tracking system to obtain the position information. First, the modem can be programmed as a mobile phone with its own mobile number, capable of sending SMS. So if you call the modem’s phone number, the device will answer your call with an SMS message with the coordinates of its position.

Also, the modem can be programmed with your mobile phone number and send you an SMS message with its position every x minutes or hours. Note that in this way, the interval can often be changed over the air by calling the modem and changing your settings.

The third possible way is with the use of appropriate software and maps installed on your mobile phone, the SMS can be translated to positions on a GPS map on the screen of your phone.

Furthermore, the real time GPS tracking device can obtain the position information when the modem sends the data in timely intervals to a server that displays the actual, as well as the past positions on a GPS map that can be viewed on any computer or mobile phone with internet connection. Perhaps the main advantage of this technique is that you can allow the real time GPS tracking system from anywhere in the world. But, still you need a subscription service that delivers these possibilities. And, normally, you will pay a monthly pay for this.

Finally, a real time GPS tracking device can get position information as more and more mobile phones are now equipped with a GPS tracking receiver. These phones can then be used as real time GPS tracking devices. Note that these days there are already a number of services available for this purpose.
