Home improvement is something that is always wanted by homeowners and usually restricted by tight household budgets. After all, if we all had enough money, we would all be living in luxury homes! Unfortunately, most of us have only enough money to plan necessary home improvements once in many years, and then too, our budgets always play spoilsport. Carrying out home improvement work ourselves is an idea that many of us turn to in an attempt to save on money that is spent on hiring costly professionals and contractors. In fact, one can easily cut down a home improvement bill by almost half simply by eliminating contractor costs.

However, not all projects can be carried out successfully by amateur do-it-yourselfers, and deciding upon what you should do yourself and what you should leave to the contractors is often tough for homeowners whose primary concern is saving on hard earned money. There are certain projects that you should do yourself and then again there are projects that are best left to professionals.

When To Do It Yourself

When it comes to stuff that you can do yourself, the first thing to do is analyze your own abilities, skills, experience, interest and time. Your collection of tools and safety gear is also something that you need to consider before carrying out a home improvement job yourself. Some tools might be tough to handle and costly to buy. While you can hire tools if you need, it is best to leave any such job where you need to hire tools to professionals since the chances of your being experienced with tools that you do not have are very low.

Take on work that is simple and easy instead of going for complicated projects. Remember that a DIY project gone bad is more likely to cost more than twice what it would if you hire a pro in the first place. Go ahead with projects that you have got the time and the skill for. Do-it-yourself kits, simple carpentry jobs like putting up shelves and racks, painting walls or furniture and carpeting the floor are some jobs that can be carried out without experience and training. You should also learn to carry out simple jobs around the house like repairing switches, plugs and plug points, changing washers and faucets and fixing leaks etcetera. Take up more complicated projects like laying floor tiles and installing laminate flooring only if you are really interested, have enough time and are skilled enough to do them.

When To Hire A Professional

Coming to things that are best left to a contractor, then the two most important things that should dissuade you from carrying out a home improvement job yourself are physical and fiscal risk. Leave all jobs that are dangerous for a layperson to the professionals. Also anything that need professional intervention if it goes wrong should be handed over to the professional in the first place since hiring contractors after you have messed things up badly will end up burning a big hole in your pocket.

Structural changes like adding or removing walls, doors or windows and work involving heavy machinery should be left to the professionals. So should other risky jobs like those involving toxic chemicals, boilers, asbestos, gas and gas appliances. In case of electricity, gas and water related jobs where strict regulations need to be adhered to, you will once again have to hire a professional. This would include work like rewiring, laying pipes, moving boilers, adding switchboards or heating appliances. Also leave work that might be simple but uninteresting for you, like painting walls, to the contractors because your chances of giving your best to something that you are not interested in are practically nil.
