Everybody just loves those bothersome dripping faucets, clogged drains and backed up toilets. But although your friendly neighborhood Prescott Arizona plumbers would be glad to repair them for you, there are some things you might want to try first. Try these useful plumbing tips to help keep those pipes, drains or toilets from acting up, or fix them quickly if they do…

#1. Never pour crystal-forming agents (like many common household drain cleaners) into your drains. Over time, these can build up and clog the drain, requiring expensive repairs.

#2. Garbage disposal not working? Don’t call the plumber until you’ve tried pushing the reset button a few times it could be as easy as that!

#3. Water pressure low in the sink or bathroom faucet? If it’s only low in one faucet in the house, then you may have a clogged up aerator. Just unscrew from the end of the faucet, remove the debris and screw back on. Pretty simple, eh?

#4. When your toilet is clogged and the old plunger just isn’t working, you can often correct the problem using a plumber’s snake. These are relatively inexpensive (especially compared to calling a plumber) and available at most hardware or large grocery stores.

#5. If your toilet won’t stop running, it is usually because the float is rising too high. Try bending the rod downward to lower the float ball a couple inches. If this doesn’t do the trick, you may have worn parts that need cleaning, adjusting or replaced.

Bonus tip: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pund of cure.” Annual inspection of both the indoor and external plumbing is highly recommended. Neglect may be the single biggest cause of many major problems and their associated high repair bills.

Remeber, if you do need to hire a plumber, be sure to use a licensed plumbing contractor.
